Ever wonder about the difference between autobiography and memoir? Lyric essay and personal essay? An immersion essay and meditative essay? Sub-genre-ing isn’t always helpful, but knowing the formal features of some popular forms does help us writers wrap our heads around what we want to write. In other words, studying some of the formal features of subgenres within the field of Creative Nonfiction has one main plus: It can help us clarify what we want to write and where we might get it published. This class will offer an overview of subgenres, reading material that pertains, and creative writing exercises to get you going.
