A Note From...

|
|
Dear [FIRSTNAME],
Happy autumn to you. This is my favorite time of year with the cooler weather and gorgeous colors. We are also on the eve of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I have never participated in this great challenge, but I imagine it is an exciting, adrenaline filled time for those who do take part. NCW has a great workshop this Saturday (Scenework: Writing the Robust Scene) that would get you ready for the NaNoWriMo kick-off on November 1st.
NCW has other great workshops as well that will be taking place over the next few weeks, including our first video-taped workshop. Hope to see you at one.
Happy Writing!
~Kerrie

Here is an article written by Kerrie Luninbill, the Social Media Account Manager with The Mantooth Company (a PR & Event Company). She wrote the article for businesses, but the same principles can be applied for author events, booksignings, writers conferences, readings... Social Media is a great tool for authors and freelancers to stay connected to their readers and clients.
Tweet Your Event to New Heights
by Kerrie Luginbill
Events have become the perfect way for companies to incorporate Twitter into their marketing plans and a great way to keep guests engaged. By incorporating Twitter into your next event you are presented with the chance to hear what your audience thinks and feels about your efforts immediately, without engaging in post-event research.
There are a number of ways to make incorporating Twitter into your event more achievable. Once you have the event in place, before you begin to promote it, create a hashtag for it (#). It should be easy to remember, short and relevant, the idea is to link all ideas and Tweets to this hashtag so that they are all easily accessible. During SXSW (the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference and Festival) #SXSW was a major trending topic, and the hashtag #SXSW could simply be clicked on and you were directed to a multitude of Tweets surrounding the conference.
Begin promoting the event via Twitter. Now that you've established the event hashtag, it is important to begin promoting the event while using the hashtag. Tweet about sponsors, ticket sales, prizes, activities, nonprofits that are involved, guest appearances and topics. Try to encourage users to engage in dialogue about the event before it even happens, and use this tool to find out what users want to see and hear at the event.
Host a "Tweet-up" for large events. Invite Twitter users to meet in real life before the event, to a "party" themed relevantly to the event. This can create buzz, establish hashtags and cause Twitter users to continue to be involved with the event. Karlie Justus, Public Information Officer of the NC State Fair, said that the TweetUp that they held for their event's impact was tangible. She noted, "People came to the fair who wouldn't have come otherwise." In fact, attendance at the NC State Fair on the night of the TweetUp was the highest Thursday night on record for the 156 year old event.
Invite attendees to Tweet during the event. Again, the hashtag #SXSW was being used throughout the entire South by Southwest Conference, offering opinions and commentary. If you have a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation, make sure the hashtag is included, and be sure to directly ask the audience to follow and Tweet during the event. Keep Twitter users actively engaged. In order to provoke Twitter users to Tweet during the event, provide prizes and games (such as trivia) to encourage them to follow the event and engage in the dialogue.
Use Twitter for post-event insight. Twitter gives event coordinators a valuable opportunity to look back attendees' thoughts. Review tweets marked with your hashtag to see what worked and what didn't. Use this as an opportunity to improve your next event or connect with people who had further questions.
