So you’ve written a book. That’s awesome! Now what? If you’re here, I’m assuming you want to publish it, and you might want to make some money in the process. That means that you’re not just a writer; you’re a business owner. And business owners need business plans.

You might think, “Why do I need a plan? Can’t I just put it out there? If you write it, they will come?” The short answer is no. The long answer is no, too.

Publishing is an exceptionally competitive industry, whether you go the traditional route or whether you opt for self-publishing. On the traditional end, agents and editors only accept a tiny percentage of manuscripts for which they receive pitches. And on the self-publishing end, hundreds, if not thousands, of books are released every day. Getting attention for a single title is hard.

The good news is, this isn’t the lottery. You can actually improve your odds of success in the publishing world. But you’re going to have to do a lot of work, and you’re going to have to change your mindset. You’re not just a writer; you’re a business owner. In essence, you run a publishing company. And to get your publishing business off the ground, you need a solid plan.

Danica Winters, Melanie Calahan, and Clare Wood, the business, marketing, and editorial directors of Self Publishing Services LLC are coming to us with a free webinar to explain what a business plan is, why authors need one, and how they should go about it.
